The Marine Corps Trials featured seven sporting events, with 155 wounded, ill and injured (WII)
Marines, Marine veterans, international service members and one veteran Navy corpsman participating.
Athletes went head to head in sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, shooting, archery, cycling,
track and field and swimming. The training and competition during the Trials was intense, with athletes
vying for top placement in team and individual sports. The athletes were divided into four teams, East,
West, Veteran and Allied. The Allied team had service members from the British Royal Marine Corps,
Australian Defense Force and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps.
The four teams fiercely competed against each other, with the Veterans finishing in first place over team
West, and team East finishing third just ahead of the Allied team. The point system used to determine the
team ranking weighted the value of each medal awarded to each athlete or their team. For individual events,
each gold medal won awarded the athlete’s team with three points, silver two points and bronze one point.
The team competition, with the exception of wheelchair basketball, awarded the team who won gold with
12 points, silver with eight, bronze with four points and forth place with one point. All of the teams
could not field a full wheelchair basketball team. As a result, the teams were intermixed to include
athletes from all four teams on each of the newly formed four teams.
The Trials also included a Warrior Pentathlon competition, where Marines competed in 50m swim, 100m track,
cycling, shot put and 10m air rifle prone events to be named all-around top athlete. The Warrior Pentathlete
for the Marine Corps Trials is Capt. Jonathan S. Disbro. Disbro, 39, is currently serving on active duty at
Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, a component of Marine Corps Systems Command, aboard Marine
Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. Disbro was selected to serve on the All-Marine Warrior Games team. This
will be his second trip to the Warrior Games.
The Wounded Warrior Regiment hosted the Marine Corps Trials aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Feb. 18-27. The staff and coaches used the Trials as a forum to assist in the selection of 50 athletes to
serve on the All-Marine Warrior Games team. The Warrior Games, a competition between all branches of service
for WII service members, will take place in Colorado Springs, Colo. 16-22 May 2011.
