Jennifer L. Simmons enlisted in the Marine Corps December 1987 and completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. After completing Supply Basic Warehousing School, she was assigned the MOS 3051 Warehouse Clerk and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class on May 2, 1988. She reported to 3d Force Service Support Group, in Okinawa, Japan for duty from May 1988 through May 1989. She deployed to Po Hang, Korea, in support of Team Spirit '88 and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on January 1, 1989. During May 1989 Lance Corporal Simmons reported to Weapons & Field Training Battalion at Edson Range, Camp Pendleton for duty as a Primary Marksmanship Instructor and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal on December 2, 1989.
During May 1993 Corporal Simmons reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton for duty as the Supply Chief for Communications and Information Systems. She reported to Drill Instructor School during April 1994 at Parris Island, South Carolina, where she served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor for Company N, Fourth Recruit Training Battalion, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on April 1, 1994. During September 1996, Sergeant SImmons reported to Combat Service Support Group 16, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona. She was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant on December 1, 1998. During January 1999 she reported to Marine Aircraft Group 49, Naval Air Station, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania for duty as the Warehouse Chief.
During June 2000, Staff Sergeant Simmons reported to Training and Education Command, Quantico, Virginia for duty at the Gray's Research Center. During this tour, she was assigned as a Sergeant Instructor for Officers Candidate School. During January 2002 Staff Sergeant Simmons reported for duty at Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. In February 2003, she was reassigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron One, First Marine Aircraft Wing for duty. She was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant on April 2, 2003 and subsequently assumed the duties as the Squadron Gunnery Sergeant. During January 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Simmons reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion, 3d Force Service Support Group for duty. From February 2006 to September 2006, she deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and was reassigned as the First Sergeant for Supply Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 15 (Forward). Upon redeployment, she assumed the duties as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Headquarters Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 37 located in Okinawa, Japan.
During January 2007, upon her promotion to the rank of First Sergeant, she reported to Communications Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group for duty. During January 2008, First Sergeant Simmons assumed the duties as the Regiment Sergeant Major for Combat Logistics Regiment-1. From February through September 2009, she deployed for the second time, in support of OIF as the First Sergeant for Security Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 7.
First Sergeant Simmons reported to 1st Intelligence Battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA during December 2009 for duty at Production and Analysis Company. She deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) during February 2010. Upon redeployment, First Sergeant Simmons was assigned to Headquarters Company, I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) Headquarters Group (MHG) for duty.
Upon her promotion to Sergeant Major, she assumed the duties as the Battalion Sergeant Major of 1st Radio Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California from August 2011 to October 2012. Sergeant Major Simmons was subsequently reassigned as the Battalion Sergeant Major at Support Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California.
Sergeant Major Simmons personal awards include; the Meritorious Service Medal in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in lieu of fourth award and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in lieu of second award.
Sergeant Major Simmons is a native of Snow Hill, North Carolina. She is married to Master Sergeant Barry F. Simmons (Retired,USMC) of Macon, Georgia.
