Warrior Athlete Reconditioning Program

Marines are warrior athletes. As such, maintaining a high level of physical fitness is crucial to their overall success. The Warrior Athlete Reconditioning Program (WAR-P) provides opportunities for wounded, ill, and injured Marines to engage in both physical and cognitive activities outside the traditional therapy setting.

Overview of WAR-P:

Marines train weekly with coaches working at the different locations where they are based. Marines must choose a primary sport and train 3-4 hours weekly. Sports include archery, cycling, track and field, shooting, swimming, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

Throughout the year, world-class and Olympic coaches conduct week-long training camps in each sport.. These camps give our Marines exposure to a sport they may have not participated in since their injury or illness.

In February, 350 athletes compete in these sports at the Marine Corps Trials at Camp Pendleton. Athletes include 200 active duty Marines, 50 veterans and up to 100 wounded service members from International militaries.

From the Marine Corps Trials, a team of 50 athletes are selected to represent the Marine Corps at the Warrior Games as they compete against the Army, Navy and Coast Guard, Air Force, and Special Operations Command.

In May 2013, the All-Marine Team won the Chairman’s Cup (championship title) at the Warrior Games for the fourth consecutive year.
