The Commandant of the Marine Corps expressed intent that wounded, ill and injured (WII) Marines should remain assigned to their parent units, so long as their medical conditions allow and their units can support them. The Wounded Warrior Regiment provides specialized services and information to WII Marines, regardless if they are assigned to the Regiment. Assignment to the Wounded Warrior Regiment

In certain circumstances, assignment to the Wounded Warrior Regiment may be appropriate and necessary to ensure the Marine’s successful transition through the phases of recovery. Standard considerations for assignment may include, but are not exclusive to the following:

• The Marine’s injury will require more than 90 days of medical treatment or rehabilitation.
• The parent command cannot support transportation requirements to the Medical Treatment Facility.
• The Marine cannot serve a function in the parent command due to his/her injuries or illness.
• The Marine has three or more medical appointments per week.
