Wounded Warrior Battalion - West |
MCB Camp Pendleton |
The mission of Wounded Warrior Battalion-West is to provide and facilitate assistance to wounded/injured/ill Marines, Sailors attached to or in support of Marine units, and their family members, throughout the phases of recovery.
The Wounded Warrior Barracks opened its doors on August 10th, 2006. What was once an annex of the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and used for a gamut of different reasons, has become a focal point for care and support of our Wounded Warriors. The initial intent behind the barracks was to provide a conducive and relaxing atmosphere for Marines and Sailors recovering from injuries or illnesses throughout the phases of recovery. From the posturepedic beds that were placed in every room to the enhancement of the entertainment room - the intent was to provide a billeting facility within the vicinity of the hospital that would allow Marines to focus solely on their recovery in order to return them to their commands "ready to fight" or transition out of the Marine Corps and to a Veteran's status.
In early 2007, General Conway - Commandant of the Marine Corps - directed the stand up and establishment of a Wounded Warrior Regiment whose sole mission would be to provide support and assistance to all recovering service members within the Marine Corps, throughout the phases of recovery, from point of injury to transition or recovery to full duty. Following the establishment of the Regiment, two battalions were formed in Camp Lejune, NC and at Camp Pendleton, Ca.
On August 1st, 2007 the Wounded Warrior Battalion-West was established. WWBn-West's make up consists of a mixture of active duty and reserve Marines whose primary mission is to facilitate recovery and transition for recovering service members (wounded, ill, and injured). While the Headquarters is located at Camp Pendleton, the battalion has several detachments located at: Naval Medical Center San Diego, Veteran's Affairs Hospital Palo Alto, Naval Hospital 29 Palms, Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, and a future representative stationed in Okinawa.
