LtCol. George S. Benson was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Woodbridge, Virginia. He is a graduate of the University of Rochester with a degree in Political Science. He was commissioned via the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1993.
Upon commissioning, LtCol. Benson completed The Basic Officers Course and Infantry Officers Course and reported in March 1994 to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. From March 1994 to March 1996, LtCol. Benson served as Rifle Platoon commander, Company C and Antiarmor Platoon commander and executive officer, Weapons Company; during this assignment he deployed in support of Operation Sea Signal.
From March to December 1996, he served as a Rifle Platoon commander and company executive officer, Marine Forces Unitas, including a deployment to South America. From December 1996 to November 1999, LtCol. Benson served as Ceremonial Rifle Platoon commander, Silent Drill Platoon commander, and commanding officer, Company A, Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C.
Upon graduating from the Armor Captain's Career Course, Ft. Knox, Kentucky in April 2000, LtCol. Benson reported to 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Twentynine Palms, California, where he served as commanding officer, Company B, and assistant operations officer; during this assignment, LtCol. Benson deployed for the opening phases of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In June 2003, LtCol. Benson reported to Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia and served as staff secretary for one year and faculty advisor, Expeditionary Warfare School for two years.
In June 2006, LtCol. Benson assumed duties as executive officer, 2d Battalion, 6th Marines and deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, March to October 2007. His most recent assignment, March 2008 to July 2009, was team chief, Military Transition Team 0110, where he advised the 1st Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division and, upon re-missioning, 14th Iraqi Army Division.
LtCol. Benson's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one star, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with one star and combat distinguishing device, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
