Provide and facilitate assistance to wounded, ill and injured Marines, sailors and their family members throughout their phases of their recovery in order to successfully return them to full duty or transition to civilian life.

The Wounded Warrior Battalion West was originally founded as the Camp Pendleton Wounded Warrior Center in August 2006 aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. The Wounded Warrior Regiment headquartered in Quantico, Va. commands the operations of Wounded Warrior Battalion West and its counterpart, Wounded Warrior Battalion East. The battalion provides a full spectrum of assets through several lines of operations that assist service members through their recovery mission and reintegration back to full duty or transition to civilian life. The battalion accomplishes this through a comprehensive approach to care, supported by a myriad of programs and infrastructures specially designed to support wounded warriors. The key to this approach is the Recovery Care Team who is assigned to each wounded, ill or injured Marine. The Recovery Care Team consists of a primary care manager, medical case manager, Marine section leader and a recovery care coordinator.

While the battalion assists wounded, ill and injured Marines through their healing process, another focus is successfully reintegrating/transitioning our Marines. This is accomplished through resources at the battalion's Warrior Hope and Care Center located at Camp Pendleton, Calif. The WHCC provides a venue for counseling, reconditioning and transitioning services for wounded, ill and injured Marines, sailors and their family members. The battalion is staffed with active duty, reserve and veteran Marines and sailors, federal civilian employees and contractors. The Battalion West's area of responsibility is generally from west of the Mississippi River to Okinawa, Japan. The headquarters and Alpha Company detachment (Det A Company) is located on Camp Pendleton Calif., with other detachments located at Naval Medical Center San Diego (Det Balboa), Twentynine Palms (Det Twentynine Palms), and Hawaii (Det Hawaii). The battalion also has liaisons at the VA Poly Trauma Center in Palo Alto, Calif., and Okinawa, Japan.
